Sean-Michael-Harris-240x300Sean Michael Harris of Fort Lauderdale, Florida was arrested for his involvement in a car crash that killed Crystal Blazek, 34, of Oakland Park.

Harris, 27, is charged with reckless driving and vehicular homicide. He was released from jail after paying a $15,200 bond. It is unclear if he has hired an attorney.

During his first court appearance was on May 23, prosecutor Ross Weiner said Harris was driving at speeds as high as 120 mph seconds before the impact.

“At the time of the crash the defendant was driving 106 mph and he didn’t even attempt to brake until less than one second before the crash,” Weiner said.

According to the police report, the alleged crash occurred at 12:01 a.m. on April 7 on Commercial Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. Harris was driving a Dodge Charger R/T east on the boulevard when he purportedly struck a Yamaha scooter that was turning left onto NE First Terrace.

Blazek was a passenger on the scooter. Both she and the scooter’s driver, who was identified as Jeffrey Harris of Oakland Park, were ejected on impact. Blazek was killed in the crash and Jeffrey Harris—no relation to Sean Harris—fractured his leg.

Investigators said mechanical malfunction, environmental conditions, or driver impairment did not contribute to the crash, but the vehicle’s instruments indicated that Harris was driving at 120 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Another fatal car crash was reported on I-95 near Oakland Park Boulevard two weeks ago. Bradley Ruben of Hollywood, Florida was charged for allegedly causing an accident on Interstate 95 that killed Juan Pedro Garcia, and attempting to flee the scene of the crash.

Ruben, 32, was charged with failing to stop at an accident involving a fatality and resisting arrest. He was released on $100,000 bond.

According to the police report, the crash occurred on the morning of May 16 just past Oakland Park Boulevard. Garcia was standing on the right shoulder of the highway waiting for a tow truck when Ruben, who was driving a Volkswagen, crashed into him.

After the crash, Ruben reportedly got out of his vehicle and attempted to run south on the highway. He was captured by highway patrol troopers and taken into custody.

“The defendant crashed and then ran, continued to run southbound on foot, he did not walk away casually. He ran,” said prosecutor Veronica Rivera during Ruben’s first appearance in court.

Investigators believe Ruben may have been under the influence at the time of the crash, but they are waiting for the results of a toxicology report before charging him with a DUI. Ruben reportedly admitted to consuming a marijuana edible before the crash.

“The defendant did admit to having an edible, he did admit to feeling its effects. So while he’s currently not charged with DUI, he did have blood drawn, the state will be looking at all possible charged down the road,” said Rivera.
